A decrease of 79.8 per cent has been marked in the number of visas issued by French consulates during 2020.
The number of short-stay visas for the Schengen Zone has decreased by 82 per cent, while the number of long-stay visas issued marked a 37.1 per cent decline, compared to 2019 figures, in which year French authorities granted 3.5 million visas,
Data revealed by the French Interior Ministry show that citizens of Morocco account for the highest number of beneficiaries of Schengen visas issued by authorities in France during 2020, (98,627), followed by:
- Russians – 78,701 Schengen visas
- Algerians – 73,276 Schengen visas
- Chinese citizens – 71,451 Schengen visas
At the same time, a total of only 49,000 Schengen visas were granted to Tunisian citizens in the same year which is about one-third of the 145,846 visas approved during 2019 for applicants from the same country.
Even though Moroccans have been interested most in obtaining a French visa during the last year, the application process to obtain a French visa has been considered difficult by many, and in particular citizens of Morocco.
The issue has even been raised by the France Member of Parliament M’Jid El Guerrab on January 12, in the French National Assembly, who urged the government to ease visa application procedures for citizens of Africa.
